"gogmorgo - rowing gears in a Grand Cherokee" (gogmorgo)

Finally got around to replacing the driver’s side on the MJ. And good thing too. I noticed they were maybe a bit loose about 15,000km ago. They’ve gradually been feeling worse and worse to drive on. I didn’t expect them to be this bad, though...
When you’re changing them, you pull the hub and shaft, undo the castle nuts on the ball joints, and give the steering knuckle a whack so it drops off the ball joints, leaving the axle looking like this:
Those are the new joints. When I gave the knuckle a tap with the mallet, the knuckle slid off the upper ball joint, and the lower joint fell apart.
Thank God that didn't happen at 75 mph on a gravel road...

Holy shit. That’s one of my worst fears. Or having a tie rod go and the front wheels point opposite directions.

I find it insane when I have actually seen that out on the road. You see a Ford Exploder off on the side of the road with the front wheels pointing the wrong ways and just wonder WTF happened? Gotta be some scary shit.
